Plenty of forums allow you to sign up in such away that you get you emails
for all new threads or just threads under certain sections, making it your
choice as to being a push or pull situation.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but I don't think the mailing list is perfect
either and thought people might either be interested in the idea or suggest
other alternatives.
