[clug] Are outgoing firewalls of any use?

I don't know as much about practical personal firewalls as I probably
should.
Anyone feel like writing a "new to linux" article with info on "good enough"
firewalls. In particular what to do about laptops that you connect all sorts
of wireless networks and 3g modems as well as your own home network.
If you did I'd sure appreciate it.
Yes I know being a security topic you can go as deep and as far as you want
and it is precisely this that I want to avoid. :)
