Many Linux distro install a reasonable filtering firewall by default.  
Certainly openSUSE does.  If running "lsmod" on your Linux PC 
includes "iptables" in the resulant list, then that is a fairly reliable 
indication of an active firewall.

If you are using such Linux then why not just turn off all this confusing 
firewalling in the router and at least confirm that the modem works.  

Would be a good idea to also disable wireless permanently in the router, to 
avoid having the neighbours leaching from your download quota with your ISP 
(which activity the default setting on most wireless modem/routers does 
nothing to prevent)
