Anyone have any idea whether this thing knows about Ubuntu, and/or
vice versa?  Or better still, has someone been able to get a Linux to
extract data from one of these?

It is not overly expensive but I would rather not blow the cost of a
reasonable bottle of scotch on something that I have to go backwards
to M$ technology to use...
