Outlook and Lotus Notes both work well when you don't have to
interoperate with people who aren't using your platform of choice. The
greatest appeal to most businesses about using Outlook is that Word
and Excel are "integrated" with that suite so you can just send the
latest copy of your Word document via email (without worrying about
having it proof read by PR, fact checked by the engineering
department, and with no concerns about version control or distribution
management).
Just ask the folks at Centrelink about how interoperable a Lotus Notes
organisation is with a Microsoft Office organisation.
Calendaring is offered by a number of alternatives. Just check the
Wikipedia page on open calendaring clients:
