I'll second that suggestion - thankfully we're past the days of your
Linux license having a prerequisite of knowing how to compile source
from scratch.

As for getting started with the shell, does anyone have comments on a
good starter?

"UNIX / Linux Tutorial for Beginners"[1] and "The Unix Primer"[2]
showed up when I asked Bing for help. I was trying to find a previous
post on the CLUG list where a bunch of people recommended books for
people just learning to use Unix. Don't suppose anyone can put their
finger on that post quickly?

The only other reference I have to books & distros is "Good linux
books & distros"[3] from 2002. I suspect the Linux landscape has
changed a little since then. Heck, back then one of my colleagues at a
previous job was still using Linux (I think he jumped ship to FreeBSD
when Linux became too mainstream).
