Any suggestions / warnings on cheap NAS with gigabit ethernet?

Welland single drive enclosures, for example, seem to be about $130.
They don't provide cifs or nfs interfaces though, instead they use some
variant of ATA-over-ethernet called NDAS. Which is bad for needing
client driver support, but good for performance. There is a linux
driver available at http://code.ximeta.com/trac-ndas, which looks like
its actively maintained, if in permanent beta.

There are single drive enclosures with support for cifs, ftp and so on
but gigabit ethernet ones seem to start about $220.
