Problem solved. 'twas gdm.conf (& .conf-custom), tho' I give myself some
latitude for being initially befuddled by the preamble/comments in each.

Suspect the culprit was a default "chooser=true" in section
[server-Chooser]; a quick massage of gdm.conf-custom, "cp gdm.conf
gdm.conf.bak" & magick happens.

Thanks especially to Peter Barker for suggestions, also for reassuring me
that I may yet be something less than completely clueless.. 8~)
