hi cluggers

finally time to de-lurk (with apologies to Alastair - think I missed a
special night, there).

Part of the reason for my non-attendance was a shiny, new Core2Duo system
w/- fresh install of Mint x86_64; very nice, very green & very stable for
the past week (until last night). However, I now seem to have inherited a
gdm issue similar to one which appeared on a few forum threads [1] around
2007-08, relating to xdmcp failures on remote login. I have no remote x
server, tho', so unsure if it's the same bug (which appears to have 'died'
due to gdm package upgrades), but I am getting near-identical log entries
to those quoted in the forums (troll02 gdmchooser[XXXX]:
GLib-GObject-WARNING: /build/buildd/glibx.x-x.xx.x/gobject/gsignal.c:1019:
unable to lookup signal "activate" of unloaded type `GtkMenuItem') but no
evidence in the logs of segfaults or euthanased child processes; just
apparent failed attempts to connect (to the X server? [0:0] appears quite
regularly).

So, instead of a nice, shiny green welcome, I'm now getting an X dialogue
box stating that "No serving hosts were found"; refreshing the list returns
the same nil results, and "Help" tells me the main window should/will list
machines available to connect to via xdmcp. I don't have any other machines
on the network, so not surprised at nil results here; I'd just like to know
what I did to persuade gdm that there's no x server available on the local
host.

I can successfully "Ctrl-Alt-F1" & login via console; have tried [xdmcp]
enable=false in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom to no avail, now wondering if I
edited my account settings when I added users for Her Indoors & t' sprocket
on Monday night (they both now have "Include" entries in
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom).

Ah, well. At least I got to brush up on some basic vi commands.. 8~)

All input appreciated; can't get back to the machine to provide more 'til
COB today (& ssh is way over my head right now.. *grin*).

TIA

andy b.
