Hey Felix,
Don't lose heart. You've stumbled on a whacky combination of modem & ISP 
that are making things much trickier than they should be. The fact that 
this took you more than 2 minutes are a sign of things being broken, 
things that don't include you. You really do know a bunch more than the 
average user of these things.
Maybe consider returning the modem and getting one as recommended by 
your ISP as "known-not-insane"
It really shouldn't be this hard and it really isn't your fault that it is.
