[clug] command line completion "correcting" already typed text.

Bash command line completion has developed a bit too much
artificial malevolence. When I'm trying to rm a file with an apostrophe
in its name; tab "corrects" what I've already typed to elide the \'
(Yes there was another file without the ', that was the one I wanted to keep.)

The workaround is to enclose the single quote in double quotes,
tab completion can cope with this, but what gives?
How do I turn it off?

KDE4 can theme my emoticons "Disgusted".
         WHAT has Linux come to?
