Hi all,

As some people on this list know, one of my other hobbies is teaching Irish
Set Dancing. This is done in groups of four couples, as is clearly explained
on my web pages. So you can see I might be a bit puzzled by the following
round of correspondence:

Hello Teacher,
Thanks for your email,I read your description and I am highly impressed and
interested in your lesson. My daughter is coming for an holiday pension in your
area,he is 18 yrs old,I don't want her to be less busy at the time of the day
and I have make decision that instead of her being less busy at the time of
the day,she should be attending your lesson, so she will be coming 30 minutes
in a day (9am to 9.30am) or at your leisure period,so I want you to calculate
the cost for 6 week and let me know the total cost and i will be paying you
with Money Order or bank checks that will be easy for you to cash in the
Country, so
get back to me with your cost.
Thanks.

Hi Derek,

I'm can't remember whether I've met you or not, but my memory for
names is bad
- - are you in Canberra?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

This to me is ringing all the bells of the classic money order cash-in scam -
the 'buyer' sends through a cheque or money order which takes some days to
complete, but 'realises' that it's for too much money, so asks you to forward
the remainder back to him via either money order or inter-bank transfer. By
the time you find out that the money order is worthless, the money's out of
your account and the 'buyer' is suspiciously silent...

The 'sending my daughter to dance classes' is a new one on me, and I'm
wondering if anyone else has any good theories as to what might be going on
here. (Obviously, my "I'm can't" error is a deliberate lead-on from "Derek"'s
bad sense of plurals ;-)

My basic plan is to respond with either "sorry, but I don't teach private
lessons", "sorry, but unless you have seven other people I can't make any
commitment to teach your daughter", or "I need to speak with her directly to
check her dancing skills, please get her to phone me on xyz". I'm not
particularly in scammer baiting and there's AFAICS bigger all chance of
catching this person anyway.

Have fun,

Paul
