Yeah, I usually just type "reset" as well, but occasionally just to 
relieve monotony you can try the Monte Carlo terminal ungunking dance:

cat /dev/urandom
^C
cat /dev/urandom
^C
cat /dev/urandom
^C

...repeat until by chance whatever weird mode you're stuck in is undone 
and things go back to normal.
