What you need to do is find a video out mode that offloads as much work to
your display hardware as possible.  You can find out what modes mplayer
supports by

mplayer -vo help

The gl and gl2 modes offload the image scaling to your graphics card's texture
scaling hardware, which otherwise takes a lot of CPU time.  If you can get the
XvMC modes working then they offload more of the decode, especially if you're
playing MPEG2 on the right hardware.  I haven't had a lot of luck getting the
other modes to work, and the ASCII modes are amusing but fairly useless.
