[clug] ATI drivers and Ubuntu/linux in general

Hi,

Before I embark upon an odysey that may or may not work (but _should_
:) has anyone out there in CLUG land compiled a "Hardy" kernel
(2.6.24) against the ATI driver version that is in Feisty? (kernel:
2.6.20) xserver-xorg-video-ati: 6.6.3-2ubuntu6.

With the change in Gutsy from the old ATI series of drivers to the
"new" series support for my card got somewhat broken. (ATI Mobility
Radeon 9600 M10). This is in a T42 thinkpad. Under the old series of
drivers I can get my two external monitors to work fine (19" + 21")
with a docking station but no amount of poking and prodding with the
new release seems to do what I want. The internal laptop screen works
fine as does one external monitor but not two. :(.

Either that or if anyone has pointers on the "Best" way to do this I
would be a most happy camper.

FWIW I am not the only one with this issue, there are mobs of posts on
various forums about this but no solution/patch yet that I have found.
Of course one current solution that keeps coming to me is to just dump
the T42+ATI and get one of the new T61's with the nvidia thing for
$1600 on special at the moment.....

Thanks
