I use the same, in the form of BackupPC. The backups are stored as a
pool of hardlinks to compressed files. If the same file exists on
multiple hosts, the compressed file exists only once and is hardlinked
as necessary.

The biggest downside is that you can't simply copy the files out of the
pool (they're compressed and filenames are mangled). BackupPC provides
some command-line tools and a web interface for restoring files. The web
interface can also show logs, pool size, compression stats, etc.
