Whatever happened to the Windows HAL?
I like the abstraction of hardware under Linux - just open up /dev/
inputs/mice (or whatever it is these days under whatever's replaced
devfs) and you get the composite output from all the mousing-type
devices connected to your computer.
Can it get any better than that?
