Yo Fred
My first attempt at Beryl yielded that problem. On Gnome, I discovered
that selecting "Disable GL Yield Setting"
(Right Click Beryl Icon in task bar, select Advanced Beryl Options and
check Disable GL Yield Settings) fixed it.
Havn't tried Beryl on KDE but it's worth a try. I have had Beryl active
since I upgraded to Feisty with 100% reliability to date (it'll probably
crash now having said that)
Hope this helps
Regards
