No, computers aren't required for this but they certainly can help make
it better. Its the reason that there are companies and universities now
using virtual environments for onboarding, training and role-playing.
It can make it much more fun, and especially for role-playing scenarios
the experiences so far seem to show that the abstraction of a virtual
world makes it easier for people to say and do things which they
wouldn't normally be willing to do in real life with their friends (eg
you get more realistic interactions).
