[clug] auto detection of USB device

I have done some upgrades and in the process stuffed the auto detection of plugin USB devices like my camera and memory stick. I 
have determined that it probably stems from the fact that hald is not running. This diagnostic may be the clue:

But what should be in /etc/hal/fdi/information  ?
