My reasons for not mentioning why I don't need a lift back are
superfluous to the discussion. That's the sense I'm using it in. I can
see that it might be interpreted as "My reason for not needing a lift
back is that I'm shiftless and superfluous", but in that case I would
have said "by reason of my otiosity".
