I think Sam's referring to Sat Nav systems specifically. Most of them  
don't provide a means for routes and maps to be uploaded except via  
the half-baked "Microsoft Windows XP"-only software that may or may  
not work after the next service pack (and which may or may not be  
supported by the supplier after you open the shrink wrap).

Most GPS devices will talk NMEA (and IIRC there is open-source  
software that talks the proprietary Garmin protocol) so you can run  
mapping software on your laptop... but it's a little cumbersome to  
have a laptop sitting in front of you on a motorbike when you're moving.
