Hi Chris,

Yes, audio across network is certainly possible. Years ago I used to do
that using esound aka esd or the Enlightened Sound Daemon[1]. According
to the esound Wikipedia article, it's getting quite old and rusty and
arts[2] (the sound daemon KDE uses) and PulseAudio[3] are popular
alternatives.

I haven't used the newer programs but with esound, you just ran esd -tcp
-public on the box with the speakers. Then on the other box set the
ESPEAKER environment variable to the IP/hostname of the one with
speakers and told your apps to use esound output. For those that didn't
support it you could use esddsp to emulate OSS.
