It's got to do with the new Intel motherboards not having integrated IDE
channels. (My 6.4GB quataum fireball is now redundant :(  )
No 2.6.17 distro will boot any further than the initial popup. It sucks,
there are workarounds, most involve a SATA CD/DVD drive. If you need to
run linux on such a system I would install the (SATA) hard drive in
another machine and then just swap it over.
