Thanks for those. I have all the smb stuff installed and I have tried
mounting the share via /etc/fstab but this has been just as flaky as
giving amarok the smb:// path. Mind you, I'd feel more confident if
amarok would let me navigate to the smb:// path.

It's quite likely that there's a useful option in fstab that I'm
missing. What I should be doing is reading man fstab and man mount.
