I like the previous comments about apt/yum and updates; I think we take  
the complexity and reliability of these things for granted.
Further to the comments on crash recovery under Linux,
with all major distros now using journalling file systems,  if you happen  
to be writing something important and suffer a crash or power failure,  
your program will restart with all your info just as you left it.
Even if it doesn't, because it is free software, any misplaced files can  
be found again.
