Hi! I probably fit the target audience for the "Make_the_move" web site
and the "Why switch" section. I have retired several years ago, have a
strong interest in most things 'computing' and have time to 'fiddle'. I
have two PC's - a desktop and a laptop. The desktop has two hard drives;
one runs Windows XP Home and the other has Ubuntu 6.06. I guess I am
very close to making a permanent switch to Linux but am being held back
by two pieces of software on Windows which I really like (TextPad (the
"absolute best" text editor) and Pretty Good Solitaire (the "world's
best" solitaire software). Given all that, I asked myself why I want to
switch and I think I would agree with all the reasons put forward by
Chris Smart. In addition I like the mental stimulation of trying
something different and the overall concept of supporting open (free)
systems (not because it is free but the community aspect of so many
people doing so much work for the benefit of others - that's probably
the 'aging lefty' coming out in me!

By the way, I have been responsible for a number of web sites over the
past few years; see:

    * Independent Scholars Association of Australia - www.isaa.org.au
    * U3A Network NSW Inc. - www.u3anetworknsw.org.au
    * Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens -
      www.esc.nsw.gov.au/community/gardens/index.html

If you want a hand with "Make the move" I would be happy to help in some
small way.

Regards,
Peter

There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to
conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the
introduction of a new order of things — Niccolo Machiavelli, /The
Prince/, ch. 6
