i'm not sure about mandrake, but i know in gentoo i would be looking in
/etc/rc.conf
and setting
DISPLAYMANAGER="blah"

if you're also looking for an alternative login manager, you might be
interested in qingy: http://qingy.sourceforge.net
(it starts before X does unlike kdm or gdm)
if you use qingy, you wouldn't want to have any other display manager
set in /etc/rc.conf or anywhere else (e.g. take the display manager
(xdm in gentoo) out of all the init runlevels).
