Sorry, my typo.  I meant "mount -o remount /var", which worked, but had 
no effect.  I was hoping it would "loosen" things enough for me to then 
be able to unmount.

The "remount as read-only, resize, reboot" idea that Martijn mentioned 
sounds like it could work.

My overnight musings lead me to the idea of simply commenting out the 
mount statement for /var, and rebooting, resizing, (checking), 
uncommenting the mount statement, and rebooting.

I'll have a play on a test box and see where that leads.
