The early version of the Gimp was Ver 1.2. Virtually all the references
listed in Amazon refer to this Gimp. You need to look for books post 2004
and I don't think there are any out yet.

The current version is 2.2 and soon to be 2.4. Sometimes there is little
correlation between what is written in the 1.2 books with the 2.2
procedures.

Grokking the GIMP by carey Bunks is odd mixture of theory and practice and
is a good reference book despite having a 1.2 backing. It is available on
the web.
