Well the output of fdisk is
Disk /dev/hdc: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc2 2433 2556 996030 82 Linux swap
/dev/hdc3 2557 4989 19543072+ 83 Linux
/dev/hdc4 1 9729 78148161 5 Extended
/dev/hdc5 1 2432 19534977 83 Linux
/dev/hdc6 4990 5660 5389776 83 Linux
/dev/hdc7 5661 5790 1044193+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hdc8 5791 9729 31639986 83 Linux
So the partitions are there, anyway, the problem probably lies with having
an extended partition starting on cylinder1
I removed a boot flag some time ago and maybe that stuffed things up
