One discovery:

802.11a is not fast enough for your average divx movie.
802.11g is not fast enough for MPEG2 at DVD quality.

Of course, there may be more to it than that, like using NFS instead of
SAMBA may improve things, taking all the other wireless interfaces down
whilst watching a movie, not using the microwave, etc...
