Further to other helpful replies (which worked on Linux and failed
on Windows, but what do you care?) I figured a cleaner way to fix
this.

Extract a file from the xpi
	unzip adblock*.xpi install.rdf
Edit the file and change the maxVersion from ".10+" to "1.0+".
Update the xpi
	zip adblock*.xpi install.rdf
it now installs cleanly.
