[clug] Help: how to use magic-sysrq with dead X?

I want to debug a problem where the machine dies hard when switching
DVB cards. This means that I must be in X when the lockup happens.

sysrq seems to work ('b' does a boot) but I cannot see any output.
I need to get to a text console but could not so far find a way to
get there. The usual console switching keys do nothing (well, the
machine is in real trouble at this point).

Any help appreciated.
