Try booting into init=/bin/bash and ensuring that the pcmcia subsystem
isn't started, and reboot.  If this "fixes" the problem upgrade to the
latest kernel and pcmcia packages in stable.  I had a problem on my Vaio
(FX990) where pcmcia wouldn't work with the std bf24 image.
