Since I was only using ssh from a few, known locations, I set the firewall
to ignore ssh requests unless they came from work or other domains I have
accounts on. Read the many excellent iptables reference materials.

Corporate firewalls often stop just about everything except web and mail.
If the default ssh port is blocked, you can also try other things like getting
ssh to listen on the telnet port.
