I suggest you just use rdiff-backup.  Incrementals are so small that
you can probably just keep them forever.  (I have backups of /etc
going back three months.)  

One great feature of it is that the most recent backup is stored as a
simple mirror directory, so it's easy to diff against it or pull back
a file you accidentally clobbered.
