I've set up several boxes (laptop and desktop) this way. The general approach is:
- - Install XP on machine
- - Partition HDD to keep XP in a partition of size n (where n is the size you need) using partitioning tool of choice (I use Partition Manager - http://www.partition-manager.com/)
- - Start up CD-based install of distro of choice (I am a RH/Fedora person, but I imagine it's not much different across distros)
- - Smart installer sets up Linux in empty partition space/other drive and intelligently partitions for you (with or without user intervention)
- - GRUB/LILO manages boot time OS selection
