If I upgraded to a faster hard dive (something newer than 1997 would be 
good ;), the machine would be happier.  It goes slow because it's now 
using swap during boot. If there wasn't enough swap space, it wouldn't 
boot cleanly since processes would be killed off in OOM situations.
