You shouldn't need to set MTU any lower than about 1400, unless there's 
a lot more going on behind the scenes than the usual.

If you have shell access, use the command "ifconfig ppp0 mtu 576", or 
set the "mru" and "mtu" options in the PPP configuration to 1400 (then 
try different sizes) - look in /etc/ppp/options, or perhaps the 
PPP/ADSL configuration page on IPCop.

If you're running PPPoA, you should be able to get away with 1460.
