I just got the DVD player to work in my notebook.  I think I might have
done something stupid in the process.

I was getting errors when trying to play a DVD thich turned out to be a
problem in libdvdcss.  Upgrading it to the latest version fixed it.  

While trying to work out what was wrong I used regionset to hard wire it to
region 4 (mask=0xf7) before noticing that the mask was originally 0xff.

My question is:  If I'd just left it alone would I have had a region free
DVD player?  Or would the drive have forced a region to be set before it
would allow any DVD to be played?
