As luck would have it I solved the problem moments after sending that.

The absolute latest versions of gcombust and xcdroast seem to know about
DVDs.

Unfortunately they don't let me burn the image of a hard disc that's 3.5
GB... So I've had to run split on them.

Nevertheless restoring the image is going to be a piece of cake ;)

cat image.* | gunzip | dd of=/dev/blah
