well the ATZ fixed it. Thanks Damien, but what does atz do exactly?  Can I
store inits I want using atz and then call them using atz? Now I'm confused.
I'm also downloading thunderbird wor win32.

Bit of a blind stab here, but have you tried getting it to send ATZ
and/or ATH0 before any other initialisation?

Well, if I was stuck on Windows I'd be using gnus in a win32 build of
emacs :-) But you might prefer mozilla mail.
