Does it happen consistently on particular mbox files? That is, are those files 
never ever compacted?
Is there any chance that you can share those mboxs and your kmailrc? Burn it 
to a CDROM (yeah, that'll stop it getting compacted!) and bring it to the 
next CLUG?
