Rute is a good place to start. Utilities section around
http://www.icon.co.za/~psheer/book/node7.html.gz
should get you going, although the right tool for the job is difficult to 
assess without knowing what the task is.

You can also buy this document as a book called Rute (I think I remember 
seeing a copy in the Angus and Robertson bookshop in Woden, which is probably 
the closest if you work in the main Health department buildings.
