Hi Brendan,

If you wish to compile your own SMP kernel rather than use
a prepackaged one from your distribution, then you simply need two
extra config options enabled - CONFIG_SMP and CONFIG_RTC.  In
menuconfig these will appear as something like SMP Support and Enhanced
Real Time Clock support.

I suggest using a kernel with the AA VM system as its much much better
on SMP than rmap, or so I've found.
