On a RedHat 7.2 box, there's a file called /etc/profile.d/colorls.sh. This 
sets up some aliases for ls to do colourization. Is that the sort of thing 
you mean? 

This isn't xterm specific, part of the bash startup. It's called from 
/etc/profile.
