Path setup

I recently installed SlackWare 8.1 (I'm not sure if that helps).

This is something i've been trying to work out for a while now... Where is the 
PATH variable set up? The kde startup program is installed to 
/opt/kde/bin/startkde, so i grep'ed for /opt/kde/bin in /etc, found nothing. 
I'm wondering how i can make other programs I install to /opt show up in my 
PATH.
