Almost all "wintv" or tv capture cards are based on the bt878 (or bt848) 
chipset that I have seen. these cards are anything between $80 and $120 at 
the fairs. When you get the card pull it out and check the numbers on the 
chip (should say bt878) in that case it works wonderfully in linux. 

Most modern machines can encode at real time in full resolution into DivX.
