The order is clear, logical and useless - the first card it finds gets 
the first interface number, count up from there.

You can see this by, say, putting two network cards in, noting their 
interface numbers, then swapping them in their physical sockets.

It's a real bugger when dealing with PCMCIA cards, although there is a 
program that tries to associate IP addresses with known cards.
